Everything You Need to Know About PL Lamp

1. What is a PL Lamp (PL Light)?

PL lamp is a widely used type of Compact Fluorescent Lamp(CFL), PL stands for Philips Lighting, the well-known lighting manufacturer who initially marketed its plug-in series, eventually, people call all of this kind of plug-in CFL as PL Lamp or PL Light.

Not like regular CFL which already has an electronic ballast inside the bulb, PL lamp must be connected to an external ballast to light up. According to the ways changing electricity flow, the external ballasts are classified into electronic ballast and magnetic ballast. Nowadays in the US, the ballasts in PL-C mostly are electronic, PL-S are magnetic.

2. How to convert PL lamp to LED

No doubt LED has more advantages than CFL, such as more energy-saving, much longer life, and eco friendly. To convert CFL PL lamp to LED, you should follow the 5 steps listed below.

Step 1. Identify which type of your CFL PL lamp is.

You may get confused by so many professional terms like PLL, PLC, PLT, PLS, G23, GX23, G24D, G24Q, but there’s always a shortcut.

First, take out the CFL light bulb and check how many pins it has. Normally it is either 2-pin or 4-pin, check below post to locate which type of Pin it is.

Second, measure the diameter and length of your CFL, make sure LED replacement will not be off-size.

Step 2. Find a proper LED replacement for your CFL PL light

With the Pin base and dimension, you can find the same type of LED replacement. For example, your CFL is 4 Pin, and from the above post you know it’s G24q, then just find a LED G24q 4 Pin with the same or smaller size.

Step 3. Finish wiring according to manufacturer’s instruction.

To replace CFL PL light, there are two types of wiring for LED PL lamp, Ballast bypass (Rewire) or Ballast compatible (plug and play). Ballast bypass (Rewire) means you need to bypass and ballast and let electricity go to LED PL, Ballast compatible (plug and play) means LED PL can work with existing ballast, you don’t need to bypass, but it MUST work with a ballast like CFL. If the ballast fails in the future, you have to get a new ballast for the LED PL.

Harolux LED PL lamp is a completely new technology, it’s HYBRID, which means it can work both ways, with ballast or without ballast, so it has more flexible usage than others. It totally depends on your decision about how to use the PL.

3. Which one is LED replacement for PL-C 13W/841/4p and PL-C 13W/827/4p?

PL-C 13W/841/4P and PL-C 13W/827/4p led replacement CFL is G24q 4 Pin, 13 watts with 900lm, 142.9mm in length. 841 is 4000 Kelvin and 827 is 2700 Kelvin. Our LED equivalent is PL-7-RPP-G24, 7 watts with 650lm and G24q 4 Pin, it can be customized to 4000 Kelvin or 2700 Kelvin. TIPS: CFL has a high lumen at the beginning but will decay very fast. so it’s unnecessary to choose LED with the same lumen to replace CFL.

4. Which model is PL-S 9W LED replacement

PL-S 9W CFL is 2 Pin G23 or GX23 base, 9 watts with 600lm, we have PL-4**-RPP-GX23 (4 watts 400lm) or PL-6**-RPP-GX23 (6 watts 600lm), both of them are GX23 2 Pin base.

5. Which one is PL-S 13W 827 2p LED replacement?

CFL PL-S 13W 827 2p is 2 Pin GX23 base, 13 watts with 825lm, our LED product is PL-6**-RPP-GX23 (6 watts 600lm) or PL-8**-RPP-GX23 (8 watts 800lm), both of them are GX23 2 Pin base, color temperature can be customized.
